Building Project

We at Gilmour Memorial are excited about what God is doing in and through His people. The gospel is advancing and there is a community around us that needs Jesus. We’ve been on a mission of making disciples since 1838, and until Christ’s return, we will press on.

We have a vision to build a more accessible space for worship and ministry (conceptual design above), and have set out on a journey of faith. Our prayer is that God will be glorified through the realization of this building project.

Below you will find more information and we pray that God will stir your heart to join us in giving to this Kingdom cause.

Combined cash and pledge amounts are reflected in the thermometer below.

We still need an additional 1.4 million dollars to reach our goal of 2.4 million dollars. When we reach this goal, God willing, we can start building!

Will you prayerfully consider helping us reach this goal?

Dear Gilmour family and friends,

For nearly 185 years followers of Jesus have been meeting at our location on Chemong Road to worship God.  And as the early church devoted themselves to biblical teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42), we strive to do the same to the glory of God.  We praise God that while the community is growing around us, we are growing at Gilmour too!

Our 130-year-old building has served the congregation well, but it has significant accessibility issues that must be addressed.  In prayerful consideration of this need, and because of our love for God and His work, we are moving forward in faith with a vision to build a place of worship and ministry that is barrier-free!

We praise God that an overwhelming majority of the active membership at Gilmour voted on November 24th, 2022 in support of this motion: “to move forward in faith and build a new place of worship and ministry based on an approximate footprint of 6000 square feet, at an estimated cost of 3 million dollars, with no construction to commence until 80% of the cost is raised.”

We read these words of Jesus found in Matthew 6:19–21 (ESV)

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is,

The words of our Lord challenge us to the core.  Most of us have a natural bent toward laying up treasures on earth so this command makes us feel uncomfortable.  If you’re like me, you may even feel inclined to start justifying recent purchases after reading this passage.  But we all need to let His words sink in and ask ourselves, where am I laying up treasures?  Am I investing in this world or the next?

There are some simple tests we can do to help us discover where we are investing.  For one, a quick look at our charitable giving receipts may give an indication.  Secondly, a look at our bank or credit card statements likely gives an indication of what we treasure as well.  Am I tithing?  Do I support gospel-advancing missions in the world?  Do I give to God’s work?

A glance through our monthly calendars will highlight what is close to our hearts as well.  Where are we spending our free time?  Does my free time always turn into ‘me-time’ or do we offer that most precious resource to the Lord and say; ‘Here I am, send me and use me for your glory’?

In his short book, The Treasure Principle, Randy Alcorn offers a wealth of wisdom.  Here are six of his main points that can really have an impact on our giving and stewardship.  And these will in turn have an impact on our rewards today and for eternity.

  1. God owns everything. I’m His money manager. We are the managers of the assets God has entrusted—not given—to us.
  2. My heart always goes where I put God’s money. Watch what happens when you reallocate your money from temporal things to eternal things.
  3. Heaven, not Earth, is my home. We are citizens of a “better country—a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16).
  4. I should live not for the dot but for the line. From the dot—our present life on earth—extends a line that goes on forever, which is an eternity in heaven.
  5. Giving is the only antidote to materialism. Giving is a joyful surrender to a greater person and a greater agenda. It dethrones me and exalts Him.
  6. God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving. God gives more money than we need so we can give generously.

I believe we can all grow in this important area of our lives. Let’s grow in our giving and laying up treasures in Heaven.  If our hearts are for God then they will be for His work, His Church, His gospel advancing, and the work of His Spirit changing lives.  Let’s give to this Kingdom cause with joy and gratitude in our hearts for all that God has done and for all that He will do, through Jesus Christ our Lord!    – Pastor Ben

Ephesians 3:20–21 (ESV)

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

When Will We Build?

We would like to move forward and build as soon as possible and thereby address our need for an accessible worship and ministry space. And because we are committed to a small mortgage, we are in a season of fundraising.

Would you consider partnering with us and the Lord by making a contribution to the Building Fund? Your gift will help us reach our goal of raising 80% of the funds necessary to start building.

As you can see from our donation thermometer, we have a great start underway-glory to God!

The estimated cost of the project is 3 million dollars.  But we need to reach 80% ($2.4 million) before construction.

Will you please pray with us?  Perhaps God is leading you to be a part of this opportunity.  Perhaps the wonderful work of God through the local church is near to your heart as well and you would like to make a donation.  If so, you can reach the office by phone at 705-745-7023, and this email:, we would love to speak with you.

2 Corinthians 9:6–8 (ESV)

6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Ben
